Articles about Nayan Mongia
Nayan Mongia is a former Indian cricket player and cricket coach. Mongia has played 44 Test matches and 140 ODIs in his cricket career. He represented India in World Cups 1996 and 1999 respectively. During his early days, Mongia used to play for Baroda. Former cricket player Allan Knott was impressed by his performance during the 1990 England tour and called him a ‘natural keeper.’ In the mid-1990s, Mongia made his debut in the Indian international cricket team. Following this, he was considered India’s first choice as a wicketkeeper. He is also termed as India’s second successful wicketkeeper after former cricketer Kiran More. In 1994, he made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Lucknow. Mongia scored 44 runs in his first innings. In the same year, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka. During the Delhi Test against Australia in 1996, Mongia scored his maiden Test century in the one-off Test. He opened the batting and scored 152 on a ‘slow turning wicket of low bounce.’ In 1994, Mongia played an extremely slow inning against West Indies after which he was suspended from the tournament. In 2001, his name was on the list of accused in the infamous match-fixing scandal.
