Ashwin breaks Kapil Dev's 37-year old record
ICC's number one test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin broke yet another record on the day two of the Pune test against Australia. Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev as he took his 64th test wicket in a domestic season. Dev had picked 63 wickets in 13 tests in 1979-80. The Chennai bowler now has 67 test wickets in 10 test matches.
Ravichandran Ashwin is an Indian off break bowler born on 17 September 1986. He played junior level cricket as an opening batsman, but eventually focused on bowling. Ashwin made his first class debut for Tamil Nadu in 2006 and went on to captain the team. He played for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League before the team was suspended.
Ashwin makes debut for Indian team
Following a successful 2010 season at the Indian Premier League and Champions League Twenty20 tournament, Ashwin was selected in Indian ODI team which toured Zimbabwe in May 2010. He made his test debut in November 2011 against West Indies.
Ashwin's success in international cricket
Ashwin won 'Man of the Series' award in his debut series. His performance of 9/128 in the debut test match is the second best by an Indian bowler. He is also the fastest Indian bowler to take 50th, 100th, 150th and 200th test wicket. During the 2012-13 Border Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin took 29 wickets, surpassing Anil Kumble's record of 27.
R Ashwin was honoured with Arjuna Award by the Government of India in 2014. Board of Control for Cricket in India awarded Ashwin with Polly Umrigar Award for international cricketer of the year in 2012-13. He also has six 'Man-of-the-match' awards, most by any Indian.
Gavaskar predicts Ashwin's future; says he will be legendary
Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said that Ravichandran Ashwin is on his way to become a legendary cricketer. Currently ranked number one in test all rounders, Ashwin took 10 wickets in the first test against New Zealand. Gavaskar added, "Ashwin is galloping towards legendary status. He is already showing himself to be a great bowler and cricketer."
Ashwin continues to be number one 'all-rounder'
Ravichandran Ashwin continued to be on the top of ICC 'all rounder' in the current test rankings. The Tamil Nadu cricketer has also topped the charts of the ICC test bowlers. Ashwin is the second player after South Africa's Jacques Kallis to reach the tally of 493 points in all rounder rankings. Ravindra Jadeja is ranked fourth in the ICC all-rounders rankings.
Ashwin becomes fastest bowler to take 250 wickets in tests
R Ashwin dismissed Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim on the fourth day of the Hyderabad Test against Bangladesh, becoming the fastest bowler to reach the 250-wicket mark. Ashwin managed the feat in just 45 tests. The previous record was held by Australia's Dennis Lillee, who did it in 48 tests. He is currently the top ranked bowler and all-rounder in Test cricket.
Steve Waugh calls Ashwin 'Bradman of bowling'
Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has said that the Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin is 'Don Bradman of Bowling.' Ahead of the India-Australia series, Waugh said, "Ashwin is basically the Bradman of bowling. What he is doing is quite incredible. The Australians would have to look at ways to overcome Ashwin's bowling." The 51-year old also said that Ashwin would be breaking more records.
