India has regained the number one spot in the ICC test rankings after registering a win against New Zealand in the second test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
India has also won the series 2-0, with one more test match to go which starts 8 October 2016 in Indore.
However, the ICC rankings will be updated after the three match test series.

At the beginning of August 2016, Australia was ranked the World's No.1 Test team. With so many Test series scheduled during the month, the spot could change hands, with India, Pakistan, and England contending for the coveted top ranking.

How have the teams fared so far?

All the contending teams had been playing the following test series - Sri Lanka vs Australia ; England vs Pakistan; and West Indies vs India.
Sri Lanka vs Australia series ended, with Lankans whitewashing the Aussies 3-0.
England vs Pakistan test series was drawn 2-2. West Indies vs India series is ongoing with India leading the series 2-0, while the second match was drawn.

England vs Pakistan Test Highlights

Pakistan won the 1st Test match of the 4-Test series against England by 75 runs.
England pocketed the next two matches with huge 330-run margin in the 2nd Test at Manchester and the 3rd Test at Brimingham, by a difference of 141 runs.
The fourth and the crucial last match of the series concluded in a draw with Pakistan pulling off a 10-wicket victory.

Sri Lanka spin their path to victory

The mighty Australians were humbled by a young Sri Lankan team in a 3-0 clean sweep.
Lankans had beaten Australia just once before this series, in one Test in 33 years of cricket between them.
Rangana Herath, the Sri Lankan left-arm spinner, played a significant role in the victory, by taking 28 wickets. He emerged as the 'player of the series'.

How can India retain the No.1 Test ranking?

While currently the No.1 Test team, India must win the series against West Indies 3-0, by beating them in the fourth test at Port of Spain.
A loss or draw against Windies in the final test will catapult Pakistan to the No.1 position, for the first time.
A 3-0 victory would also mark India's second ever three Test-win in an away series.

Pakistan displaces India as No.1 Test team

India's 4th Test draw against West Indies, due to rain, costed us the No.1 spot as Pakistan rose to displace India as the No.1 team in 'ICC Test rankings'.
Despite the 2-0 series win, India with 110 points was placed second, behind Pakistan which has 111 points.
Pakistan became the 5th team besides Australia, India, England, and South Africa, to top the ICC rankings.
