Pacquiao to return to the ring
Top promoter Bob Arum has stated that Manny Pacquiao would come of retirement. Arum stated that Pacquiao would come out of retirement to fight at the main event of an HBO pay-per-view card in Las Vegas. The fight has been scheduled tentatively for either 29 October or 5 November this year. He added that so far no opponent has been decided upon.
Emmanuel "Manny" Dapidran Pacquiao was born on 17 Dec 1978 in Kibawe, Philippines. Pacquiao dropped out of school and left home aged 14, because of severe poverty. In January 1995, at the age of 16, he began his professional boxing career with a bout against Edmund Ignacio. Pacquiao won the fight in four rounds, unanimously. The victory propelled him to a successful boxing career.
In December 1998, Pacquiao won a bout against Chatchai Sasakul, taking the World Boxing Council flyweight title, his first major championship. Moving to a higher weight division, Manny won in a technical knockout against Lehlo Ledwaba in 2001 to capture the International Boxing Federation junior featherweight title. He later went on to claim world titles in a total of eight different weight divisions.
Manny Pacquiao goes by the popular nickname "Pac-Man". His other nicknames include People's Champion, The Destroyer, The Mexecutioner, The Fighting Congressman, Pambansang Ninong (National Godfather), and The Filipino Slugger.
Pacquiao's bout against Marco Antonio in Texas in 2003, is considered a fight that defined his career, when he become The Ring magazine featherweight champion. He became the first Asian and Filipino to be a three-division world champion. Over next several years, Pacquiao won World Boxing Association and IBF featherweight titles, the WBC and The Ring's junior lightweight titles, and the WBC lightweight title.
World Boxing Council, Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), and World Boxing Organization have named him "Fighter of the Decade" for the 2000s decade. Manny Pacquiao won the "Fighter of the Year" award by The Ring and BWAA thrice in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
In what was billed as "Fight of the Century," Pacquiao fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on 2 May 2015. Pacquiao lost the fight owing to a shoulder injury, to the disappointment of many fans. Mayweather was criticized for his defense-oriented strategy. It was estimated that a worldwide audience of 400 million people watched the match.
Manny Pacquiao is currently ranked number seven on the Ring and the longest reigning top-10 on the pound-for-pound list. Pacquiao, as it stands, has a 57-6-2 boxing record. Apart from boxing, Pacquiao has also been involved in basketball, business, acting, music recording and politics. He is currently the member of House of representatives in the 16th Congress of the Philippines.
Manny Pacquiao is the first and only eight-division world champion, who has won ten world titles, as well as the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes.
Boxing great Manny Pacquiao said that he will step out of the boxing ring on April 9, after his final bout against Timothy Bradley. He is set to battle Bradley in Las Vegas for the American WBO welterweight championship. Pacquiao, who is a Congressman in Philippines, said that he felt like it was an ideal time to retire and engage fully in politics.
