6 dead after powerful earthquake hits Bangladesh
A powerful 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Bangladesh on Friday morning. The quake has resulted in at least six fatalities and injured dozens, according to local media reports. The epicenter was located in the Ghorashal area of Narsingdi district, about 25km from Dhaka, at a depth of 10km, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
Building collapses and pedestrian fatalities in Dhaka
Initial police reports confirmed three deaths, but later reports from Dhaka-based DBC Television confirmed six fatalities. These included three people who died when parts of a building roof and wall collapsed and three pedestrians crushed by falling railings. The quake also caused panic-driven injuries as buildings swayed sharply during the tremor.
Tremors felt across West Bengal and northeastern states
The tremors were widely felt across West Bengal and other northeastern states of India, with residents rushing outdoors as a precautionary measure. In Kolkata, many residents took to social media to express their fear over the quake's intensity. "Small quake but big panic," wrote Supratim Maitra on X, adding that even a small jolt created fear in neighborhoods.
