Times Square- Three critical after car mows down pedestrians

On Thursday, a speeding car smashed into pedestrians on a sidewalk in New York City's Times Square, claiming 1 life and injuring 22 others.

Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York told reporters that there weren't any indications to prove that it was an act of terror.

The driver had already been arrested twice before, for drunk driving.

The accident took place at 12:00 (local time) and resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman.

According to witness accounts, the driver was driving against traffic before his burgundy Honda sedan mounted the sidewalk and hit pedestrians.

The crash took place near the headquarters of the Thomson Reuters news agency.

Television footage displayed police officers restraining a man in a dark T-shirt.

Three people remained critical a day after a car ploughed into pedestrians in NY's Times Square. One was killed and 20 injured.

Though Mayor Bill de Blasio said it wasn't prima facie a terror attack, he added it looked like the driver tried to mow down people intentionally, "in the sense that he was troubled and lashing out".

Richard Rojas, the 26-year-old motorist, has prior convictions for drunk driving and has been arrested at least twice, including over "misdemeanor battery".

Police said he was intoxicated and had been speeding for three blocks.

However, there was no other incident in the 1.5 hours since he had left home.

He is now facing charges of murder, attempted murder and vehicular homicide.
