The next major step is to prove that life exists or existed somewhere apart from our earth.

Princeton Satellite Systems is working on fusion-reactors that would power future rockets. These engines would get explorers faster to their destination. For example, as per estimates six 5-megawatt fusion rockets can accomplish round-trip Mars missions in 310 days (compared to 2+ years using existing technology).
