Bio-toilets carry their own sewage-treatment system with them which is placed beneath the toilet seat. The composting chamber has bacteria which digest human waste and leave behind water and methane. This water is disinfected and released on the tracks. No toilet waste would be thrown on railway tracks from these toilets.

Toilets on Indian Railways trains are often dirty and choked because many passengers dump garbage and plastic into them. To maintain cleanliness, Railways also provides dustbins in coaches for disposal of waste. Passengers should always use these dustbins to dispose of waste.
