Why is landing on the dark side of the moon historic?

Prior to Chang'e-4's landing on the dark side of the moon on January 3, spacecraft had only viewed the dark side. No spacecraft had ever landed on it.

Owing to the moon being tidally locked to the Earth, we can only see one side of the moon i.e. the near side, while the far side remains completely obscured from view. Hence, it is called the dark side of the moon.

How many moon landings have there been?

The near side of the moon was reached by US astronauts between 1969 and 1976, while the Soviet Union achieved the feat in 1976. In 2013, China made its first landing on the near side using its Chang'e-3 probe.
