Why is Chennai suffering from a water crisis?
All four reservoirs that supply the city with water—including the Chembarambakkam lake, Chennai's largest source of drinking water—have turned dry. Additionally, groundwater resources have also depleted.

Where does Chennai get its water from?
Apart from the four Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Red Hills and Cholavaram reservoirs, Chennai's groundwater resources are replenished by five lakes within 60km of the city— Puzhal, Sholavaram, Kaliveli, Pulicat, and Maduranthakam.

What is the state government doing?
Chief Minister E Palaniswami argues that the government has taken necessary steps to tackle the situation (Tamil Nadu allotted Rs. 212 crores for digging deep bores). A fifth reservoir for Chennai is also in the works.
