Bengaluru may replace all existing streetlights with LED lights

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) is planning to replace all of its existing street lights with LED lights.

The civic body will float a tender for the same next week; there are 5 lakh streetlights in BBMP's limits.

The BBMP hopes LED lights will decrease its annual expenditure on electricity of over Rs. 2cr by 50-60%

BBMP to reduce garbage cess for self-composting bulk generators

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) has decided to push the scheme of self-composting garbage by providing incentives.

According to a proposal tabled in front of the BBMP taxation and finance committee, the BBMP plans on giving partial concessions under garbage cess collection for bulk generators.

The BBMP will stop collecting wet waste from bulk generators of residential and commercial complexes.

Metro route to KIA finalized by Karnataka Government

On 17th May, the Karnataka Government announced that Nagawara-Hegde Nagar-Jakkur-Yelahanka has been finalized as the alternative Metro route to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

Urban Development Minister K.J. George said a detailed project report would soon be made ready to decide the funding structure, distance of the route, project costs and other details.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, too, approved the alternative airport route.

Civic officials to seek more time for cleaning Bellandur Lake

Civic agency officials will plead for more time for the cleaning of lake Bellandur in the upcoming hearing with the National Green Tribunal today (Thursday).

The State Government and civic agencies were heavily censured by the tribunal last month for their complete "apathy" over the treatment of the lake.

Officials from Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) said de-weeding the lake would itself take 4 months.


PU students no longer required to wear uniforms

The Department of Pre-University Education issued a notice to all colleges that students are no longer mandated to wear uniforms.

This notification is applicable to all government, aided and private colleges and will be enforced from the upcoming (2017-2018) academic year.

It has been specified in the guidelines that colleges insisting on students wearing uniforms will have action initiated against them.

Govt. to recommend SC status for some Bangladeshi migrants

According to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, TB Jayachandra, the Karnataka Government is contemplating granting the Scheduled Caste (SC) status to some of the state's Bangladeshi migrants.

In a press conference, the Minister said that the Cabinet will recommend to the Centre the inclusion of Namasudra, Pod/Poundra and Rajbanshi castes in the list of Scheduled Castes in the state.
