Mangalsutra rumor triggers panic among women in Karnataka
Karnataka witnessed another example of a sinister rumor turning into mass hysteria when women in six districts began hitting beads of their mangalsutra with stones to prevent misfortune. The rumor was that beads in mangalsutra could bring misfortune to their husbands.
State authorities had to issue a public appeal requesting women not to be misguided by such rumors.

Bengaluru: Police arrest Nigerian, local in online scam
Cybercrime police nabbed two men including a Nigerian for allegedly duping people in online fraud.
Police recovered one motorcycle, five mobile phones and a laptop from them.
According to police, the accused Peter, a Nigerian, would post car photos on portals for sale. Once people responded, he would ask people to do online transaction and would go missing as money was transferred.
Mysuru education dept imposes 'Sarees only' for teachers
The Department of Collegiate Education has sent a circular to all Mysuru degree colleges that says that all lady lecturers are supposed to come to college dressed only in sarees.
This has created quite a storm. A Mysuru college teacher Sridevi S, said, "Asking us to come in sarees isn't the government's job. Are they the moral police? We know our limits."

Karnataka: Labourer abducted, set on fire by three known men
A saw mill labourer, Shaik Mohammad Noor was set on fire by three unknown persons near Inamdar College on the outskirts of Kalaburagi city.
The three men abducted Noor and at an isolated place, poured petrol on him and set him ablaze.
Noor was rescued by a passing auto-rickshaw driver. He is undergoing treatment in hospital.
The police have registered a case.
Karnataka govt to provide mattresses for SC/ST students
Ahead of Karnataka Assembly polls of 2018, the Congress-led government is all set to replace cotton mattresses with pocket-spring mattresses for SC/ST students.
The social welfare department has put forward a proposal for purchase of 1.72 lakh pocket spring mattresses. 61,382 mattresses and pillows will be supplied by the department-run pre and post-matric hostels in which SC and ST students are staying.
Authorities ban tourists from entering in Dakshina Kannada beaches
In light of recent drowning deaths, district administration in Dakshina Kannada has banned the tourists from entering the water at the beaches till August end.
The Deputy Commissioner said, "If a person jumps into the water, he or she will be lucky if the life guards or fishermen can save them. The visibility level due to the force of the water is low and it is extremely dangerous."
