Orkut Founder releases new social media app

In 2016, ex-Google employee and Orkut founder, Orkut Büyükkökten, released a new social media app called Hello.

The app, available in several languages including Portuguese, French, Spanish and Turkish, apart from English, is available on iOS and Android platforms.

Orkut Büyükkökten announced the launch of Hello on inviting users to use Hello.

Owned and operated by Google, Orkut was started in 2004 and was named after its creator, Orkut Büyükkökten.

After enjoying 10 years of relative success, Orkut was shut down by Google in 2014.

The reason behind the shut down, as reported by Google, was the fact that other social media platforms like Google+, Facebook, YouTube etc. had "outpaced" Orkut in terms of growth.

Orkut was the most popular social media website in Brazil and India. Of Orkut's user base, around 52% were from Brazil, 20% were from India, and 18% were from the US.

Orkut was a social media platform under Google aimed at facilitating communication between family, friends, and colleagues over the internet.

Google integrated its instant messaging Google Talk feature with Orkut to enable connected people to chat online via Orkut's page.

However, in spite of its popularity, Orkut was plagued with security issues and spam messages and hacked profiles were commonplace.

Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had banned Orkut due to "ethical" and security issues.

Hello aims to connect users based on their passions and common interests.

According to the website, Hello "lets you show the world who you are, express what you love, and create meaningful connections."

The company has a team of 20 people including some ex-Google engineers.

19 May 2017Orkut founder's app Hello, now available for India

Hello, a new social media platform launched by Orkut founder Orkut Büyükkökten in August 2016, is now available for use in India. The company said the India app is till under testing.

Hello is only available through its application and does not have a desktop or mobile web version.

India once had one of the largest user bases for Orkut alongside Brazil.
