Visit the TIN-NSDL website and click on 'Pay Taxes Online'. You will be re-directed to the Challan selection page. Select Challan No.280 under the last option 'Non-TDS/TCS'. On the e-payment page, select '(0021) Income Tax (other than companies)', enter necessary details, select the type of payment- (100) Advance Tax or (300) Self-Assessment Tax, and mode of payment. Submit the form and make the payment.

To pay your tax offline, visit the nearest tax branch and ask for Challan 280. Fill in the form, submit it and pay the tax amount either by cheque or by cash. The official at the bank will hand over the payment receipt to you.

While paying tax, it is very necessary to make sure that you choose the correct assessment year. The assessment year is the one following the financial year. For example, if I am paying tax for the financial year 2018-19, then I should select the year 2019-20 as the assessment year.
