Volkswagen launches 'Made in India' SUV

German automaker Volkswagen has launched its first "Made in India" SUV, the Tiguan, which was unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016.

The model seeks to compete with the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The Tiguan has been assembled in Skoda's Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra.

The move is aimed at reviving Volkswagen's falling market share in India.

Volkswagen is one of the world's largest automotive company, founded nearly 69 years ago in 1937.

The auto giant is the manufacturer of cars such as Volkswagen Polo, Vento and Volkswagen Passat.

With its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, the company has scripted output of around 10.1 million units last year.

Headed by Matthias Muller, Volkswagen recorded revenues of $245 billion in 2014.

Tiguan is robust and capable, says VW

Volkswagen Group sales India MD Thierry Lespiaucq said, "The Tiguan has proven its mettle as a robust and capable car line world over, and we are delighted to introduce our global best-seller in the Indian market."

In a first for India, the Tiguan is based on the 4Motion intelligent all-wheel drive system based on the modern MQB platform. Its mechanics can be adjusted based on terrain.

Its 2 litre diesel engine and 7 speed gear box churn out 147 bhp of power and 340Nm of top torque.

Its size and ground clearance are identical to the Audi Q3.

2 models launched in India

The Tiguan has been launched in India with two variants the Comfortline and Highline. The Comfortline will retail at Rs. 27.68 lakh, while the Highline will retail at Rs. 31.04 lakh.
