Modi apologizes for not accepting doctorate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had earlier refused to accept an honorary doctorate from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), apologized for his decision at the Centenary Year Convocation of BHU.

Modi went on to say, "What the people of Banaras have given me, no University can. So I am indebted to Banaras."

He thanked the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor and the University for their consideration.

The Southern University System of Louisiana, USA, had offered to confer an honorary doctorate on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his work in inclusive growth.

The degree was to be conferred because of Modi's contribution towards social transformation, especially for empowering minorities and women in Gujarat, and work done by him in the first 100 days as PM.

Modi, however, refused to accept.

Modi offered same degree as Mandela

The Southern University System of Louisiana had offered Nelson Mandela the same degree in 2002, as they did to Narendra Modi in 2016. The university also invited Modi to be the Commencement Speaker for Fall 2015 Commencement.

Narendra Modi refuses BHU honorary degree

Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to accept an honorary doctorate degree from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

BHU had sought to confer a Doctor of Laws (LLD) (honoris causa) on Modi for his "yeoman services as an innovator, reformer and an outstanding leader in public service and governance."

Official sources cited Modi's policy of not accepting such degrees as a reason for the refusal.

Gujarat University rejects RTI on Modi degree

While Narendra Modi has been offered several honorary degrees, the Gujarat University rejected a RTI regarding Narendra Modi's educational qualification. An Ahmedabad-based RTI activisit had filed the request, but Gujarat University said, "this information can’t be made public."
