Laxmi also received US State Department's International Women of Courage Award in 2014 from the former First Lady of United States, Michelle Obama.
Talking about the movie, Deepika revealed that Laxmi's story had a deep impact on her.
She was so deeply moved by the story that she decided to turn producer for this Meghna Gulzar directorial.
"When I heard this story, I was deeply moved as it's not just one of violence but of strength and courage, hope and victory," Deepika told Mumbai Mirror.
Notably, this will be Meghna Gulzar's first project with Deepika and she is all praises for the actress.
Meghna is confident about Deepika doing justice to the role and said that she was her first choice.

Meghna, who was highly appreciated for her last directorial 'Raazi', is looking forward to directing Laxmi Agarwal's story.
"Using Laxmi's story as a lens, we are attempting to explore these aspects and the consequences of acid-related violence in our society," she added.
Meghna feels it is a story that needs to be told as only awareness will bring a change in society.
