Netflix cancels 'Daredevil' after 3 seasons

Cancellation news

The end of the vigilante streak

Two weeks after Daredevil showrunner, Erik Oleson pitched the idea for Season 4 to Netflix and Marvel executives, they announced the cancellation of the show.

This brings their Marvel content down to Jessica Jones and The Punisher which seem likely to finish their 5 show deal.

Notably, Netflix expressed their pride in Daredevil. Following Season 3's success, they wanted to end on a high note.

Thanks

A word of gratitude during the farewell

While announcing the news of the cancellation, Netflix expressed immense pride in the show and the showrunner Erik.

They also thanked the incredible writers, stellar cast and crew and specifically mentioned Charlie Cox, who plays the protagonist, Matt Murdock or Daredevil.

Thanking their fans, they said the show's 3 seasons could still be streamed on Netflix and Daredevil would appear in future Marvel projects.

Reasons

Why did the show get canceled?

The news of cancellation, though shocking, was forthcoming for some time.

Disney outlined its plans to launch their own streaming service, Disney+, in 2019 with the intention of removing all Marvel content from other streamers to exclusively feature them on their platform.

Moreover, Netflix's relationship has been strained with Marvel since Luke Cage when they disagreed over reducing the number of episodes to 10.

One stop shop for all the superhero needs

Besides Disney's plans to recall Marvel content to stream exclusively on their platform, they are going to air original content about heroes and characters whose stories went unexplored in Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some shows in the pipelines include Tom Hiddleston's Loki, Falcon and Winter Soldier.

Fan reactions

How did the fans react?

Of all Marvel shows on Netflix, Daredevil holds a special place in many hearts due to the dark, gritty and realistic take on Marvel's hero and opening the door to other Marvel content on television.

While some fans consoled themselves that Season 3 ended well, others angrily refused to watch a PG-13 Daredevil on Disney, expressing sadness for Cox who loved playing the character.
