The actor-director duo last worked together nearly two decades ago in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Salman also did an extended cameo in Bhansali's Saawariya.
A source close to the development confirmed the news to Mumbai Mirror.
Last September, on Bigg Boss 12, Salman had hinted at a possible reunion with Bhansali. "I don't know much about it. Have only heard a one-liner about it. But Sanjay is not answering my calls. Please ask him to speak to me," he had said.
Now, according to the source, both Salman and Bhansali have been looking forward to work together for quite some time.
The movie is a love story and Bhansali wants to portray a different side of Salman, breaking the mould of his action image.
Currently, Bhansali is writing the screenplay and the basic script is locked.
He had discussed it with Salman before Padmaavat's release.

The source said the subject is "close to Bhansali's heart and belongs in a space which hasn't been explored till date."
And, of course, Bhansali will be composing the background score himself.
The source further informed, "The other members of the cast will be signed soon. The female lead will be an A-lister and they are looking at a 2020 release."
Apart from the anonymous source, Prerna Singh, CEO of Bhansali Productions, also confirmed the news.
"Their collaboration is the best thing that can happen in terms of story-telling," she said.
Meanwhile, Salman is currently shooting for Bharat, which also features Katrina Kaif, Jackie Shroff, Disha Patani, and Tabu. Later this year, Salman will begin shooting for Dabangg 3 along with Sonakshi Sinha.
