Veeru Devgan, Bollywood's well-known stunt director and father of actor Ajay Devgn, died on Monday. His last rites will be held at 6 PM in Mumbai.
According to reports, he breathed his last at Surya Hospital in Santacruz.
Veeru choreographed action in over 80 Bollywood movies and is also credited for helping Ajay make inroads in the industry.
Veeru directed action scenes in several movies
In his career spanning decades, Veeru directed action scenes in many movies including Ishq (1997), Shahenshah (1988), Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), Mr. India (1987), Himmatwala (1983) and Mr. Natwarlal (1979).
He put on the hat of the director for Hindustan Ki Kasam, which released in 1999.
The movie starred Ajay, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, and actresses Manisha Koirala and Sushmita Sen.
Veeru made Ajay's entry in 'Phool Aur Kaante' memorable
With Hindustan Ki Kasam, Veeru tried to do something different. The movie's budget increased as he wanted to film never-seen-before action sequences.
Though the movie tanked, its action scenes were better than what Bollywood produced at the time.
In fact, Ajay's entry in his debut movie Phool Aur Kaante was also Veeru's idea. By giving his son a "hero-like" entry, he shaped Ajay's career.
Once, Bobby Deol revealed funny tale about Ajay and Veeru
Veeru wanted to see Ajay succeed in life. For this purpose, he built a gym for his son.
But in his college days, Ajay wasn't interested in sweating it out. So, he came up with an idea.
Before Veeru entered the gym, Ajay quickly sprayed water all over his body. This interesting anecdote was revealed by actor Bobby Deol, who is also Ajay's friend.
Ajay was naughty: Deol
"Just before his dad came, he (Ajay) would quickly spray water on himself to make it seem like he was sweating. He was naughty. I don't know whether he is envious of my physique, but I think now even he's fighting fit," Bobby had said.
Meanwhile, Vicky Kaushal's father remembered Veeru with respect
As soon as the sad news of Veeru's death appeared, people expressed condolences on social media.
Sham Kaushal, action director and father of actor Vicky Kaushal, said Veeru was way ahead of his times.
"I became a stuntman with his blessings on 8th August, 1980 as he signed my application to become a stuntman & made me part of his team," he tweeted.
