Karni Sena members attack Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film sets

Members of Jaipur-based youth association Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS) attacked filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and vandalized the sets for his upcoming movie Padmavati.

The film, which stars Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone as Alauddin Khilji, Rawal Ratan Singh, and Rani Padmini respectively, was accused by the attackers of "distorting history".

The police had to step in to control the situation.

"We had learnt that a few intimate scenes between Alauddin Khalji and Padmini were part of the film and it is completely unacceptable for us," said Lokendra Singh Kalvi, the founder of Shri Rajput Karni Sena.

What is known about the clash

On learning about the alleged distortion of history, large numbers of people owing allegiance to the Shri Rajput Karni Sena approached the Jaigarh Fort to try and disrupt the shooting.

An argument broke out, at which point people associated with the film reportedly opened fire aiming at the sky.

This accelerated the tension which led to a clash between both parties.

Founded in 2006, the Jaipur-based Shri Rajput Karni Sena is a Rajput caste organization favouring "national unity", and opposed to corruption and caste-based positive discrimination. They have been described both as a Hindutva and a Hindu nationalist group.

Padmavati shoot in Jaipur called off

National-award winning director Sanjay Leela Bhansali called off the shoot for his movie Padmavati, a day after the sets were vandalized by the Rajput Karni Sena for allegedly distorting historical facts.

Bhansali said he had called off the shoot, keeping in mind the safety of the crew.

He said there was no "no dream sequence or objectionable scene between Rani Padmavati and Allauddin Khilji."

Bhansali's 'Padmavati' set attacked in Kolhapur

A group of unidentified vandals attacked and set fire to the sets of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie 'Padmavati' in Kolhapur.

Sources added that a police complaint was filed, following which police picked up some unidentified individuals.

Last month the set was attacked in a similar manner in Jaipur.

Reports suggested that individuals affiliated to the Karni Sena were behind the attack.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali reassures attackers on Padmavati

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has clarified that there is no "romantic dream sequence or anything objectionable" in the movie Padmavati.

The sets of the film were attacked by Rajput Karni Sena workers who objected to the filmmakers apparent "distortion" of historical facts and knowledge.

Bhansali said he was "confident that Mewar Rajputana will be proud of the film."
