The Screen Actors Guild Awards 2017

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards 2017 saw a few surprise winners, but most notably, the event was dominated by dissent against President Trump's immigration policy and ban on refugees.

Theodore Melfi-directed Hidden Awards, which tells the true story of black female mathematicians involved in the 1960s space race, was the surprise winner of the top SAG award.

"We will repel bullies, we will shelter freaks and outcasts, we will hunt monsters, and when we are lost, we will punch some people in the face, and we will do it all with soul, with heart and with joy," said actor David Harbour.


Actors express dissent over Trump's immigration policy

Ashton Kutcher opened the ceremony by greeting "everyone at home and everyone in airports that belong in my America."

Emma Stone said that the situation in America was "very inexcusable and scary".

Bryan Cranston, who played President Lyndon Johnson, said that Johnson, if alive, would tell Trump to not "piss in the soup all of us gotta eat".

Julia Louis-Dreyfus also sharply criticized Trump.

Lily Tomlin hints at impending disaster under the Trump regime

"Did you hear? The doomsday clock has been moved to two and a half minutes to midnight and this award came just in time," said 77 year-old veteran actress and long time activist Lily Tomlin, who was given the Lifetime Achievement award.


The main winners of the SAG Awards 2017

The awards for outstanding male and female actors in leading roles were clinched by Denzel Washington (Fences) and Emma Stone (La La Land) respectively.

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Viola Davis (Fences) won the awards for outstanding male and female actors in supporting roles respectively.

The best film award went to Hidden Figures, while the best TV show award went to Stranger Things.
