Reportedly, Shabana will essay the role of Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of the Office of Naval Intelligence in the nine-part web series.
Sharing her excitement over the same, the Chalk n Duster actress stated, "It can't get bigger than this."
In a statement, the veteran actress said, "Asian actors have been fighting for color-blind casting for years. Finally, it becomes a reality! This is a completely new territory for me. I'm both excited and nervous, which is a good place to be in."
The action-adventure series will be helmed by Otto Bathurst, who had directed the first episode of Black Mirror.
On being quizzed about how she managed to get the role, the 68-year-old actress stated, "It just fell into my lap! I had to give up on two projects I was scheduled to do here, but I figured it would be worth it."
Notably, Halo will be based on the popular game franchise by the same name.
The series will dramatize the conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as Covenant in the 26th century.
It will also have personal stories intertwined with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.
In fact, Showtime boss David Nevins called Halo as their "most ambitious series."
Apart from Shabana, Halo will also star Natascha McElhone, Bokeem Woodbine, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac and Kate Kennedy in the lead roles.
Reportedly, McElhone will have a double role in the series as Dr. Catherine Halsey, the creator of the Spartan super-soldiers, and Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history.
The series may begin rolling in Budapest later this year.
For now, Shabana will be seen Faraz Ansari's upcoming queer drama Sheer Khurma. The movie will also star Swara Bhaskar, and Divya Dutta, with the latter playing Swara's love interest. Surekha Sikri of Balika Vadhu fame will also be seen in a key role.
