The Surrogacy (regulation) Bill of 2016 bans not only commercial surrogacy but also couples that are homosexual, living-in together and single individuals from surrogacy.

The Bill, awaiting Parliamentary nod, makes only childless Indian heterosexual couples (with proven medical problems, married for a minimum of 5 years) eligible for surrogacy.

Karan Johar is among the last few individuals that could commission the rent-a-womb method legally.
