Petition filed against Ajay Devgn's 'Tanhaji' in Delhi High Court
Barely days after massive protests were carried out against period drama movie Panipat, another history-based film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior has landed into a legal soup, over alleged distortion of history.
The petition is due to be heard on December 19
Reportedly, the matter was listed before the court on Friday (December 13) but could not be proceeded as the presiding judge was on leave. The petition will now be heard on December 19.
According to the petition, the Om Raut directorial purportedly showcases Tanaji Malusare as belonging to the Maratha community, while the objecting party claims that he is actually a Koli Maratha.
'Tanhaji' has Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Saif Ali Khan in lead
Notably, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is based on the real-life, 17th-century battle between Maratha Empire warrior Tanaji Malusare and Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's trusted leader Uday Bhan.
The movie stars Ajay Devgn, his wife Kajol, Saif Ali Khan, Sharad Kelkar, Jagapathi Babu, and Luke Kenny.
It is scheduled to be released on January 10, 2020.
Interestingly, Tanhaji will be the 100th film of Devgn's career.
Recently, there were huge protests against Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Panipat'
However, this is not the first that a period drama film is in trouble over alleged distortion of historical facts.
Recently, there were huge protests in parts of Rajasthan and Haryana against Ashutosh Gowariker's Panipat, as several Jat groups alleged that the movie portrays their ancestors in poor light.
Subsequently, the producers of the movie have now reportedly agreed to delete the controversial scene.
Previously, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmaavat' faced similar wrath
Similarly, last year in January, several fringe groups carried out violent protests across North India against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat, over the alleged wrongful portrayal of Rani Padmini of Chittor. However, the film was eventually cleared by the Censor Board after some edits.
