IOA to rope in more icons as ambassadors

After facing severe criticism for appointing Salman Khan as the goodwill ambassador of India's Olympic contingent, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) promised to rope in more icons from fields like music, cricket and other sports.

The IOA clarified that Salman Khan's appointment was to increase viewership and interest in the Olympics.

They also clarified that no money was involved in Salman Khan's appointment.

Bollywood icon Salman Khan was named the goodwill ambassador of the Indian Olympic contingent for the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The announcement was made in the presence of Olympic medallists and atheletes including MC Mary Kom, hockey captain Sardar Singh among others.

The appointment was facilitated by Indian Olympic Association's official marketing agency, IOS Sports & Entertainment.

Salman Khan's competition

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had also considered Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan for the post of goodwill ambassador. However, it opined that Salman Khan connected more with sportspersons and the youth.

Star wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, a London Olympics bronze medallist, questioned the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) decision to appoint Salman Khan as the goodwill ambassador for India's Olympic contingent.

The 33 year-old wrestler said that a sportsman should have been appointed instead of Salman Khan.

He questioned Salman Khan's contribution to sports, and further added, "This country needs medals, not sponsors".

24 Apr 2016Milkha Singh slams IOA

Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh slammed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for its decision to appoint Salman Khan as the Indian Olympic contingent's goodwill ambassador.

The Padma Shri-winning athlete added that the athletes representing India were India's biggest ambassadors, and labelled the IOA's decision as "wrong".

"PT Usha, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Ajit Pal are more capable to be ambassadors," he said.

Milkha Singh wants government intervention

In an interview with ANI, Milkha Singh said, "It is unfair to send a Bollywood celebrity as the brand ambassadors for sports. The government must intervene in this regard so that the IOA can reconsider the decision".

While Salman Khan's appointment as the Goodwill Ambassador at the Rio Olympics 2016 faced widespread criticism, noteworthy personalities have spoken in support of Khan.

Unexpectedly, Salman's former girlfriend Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has supported him saying anyone who is doing good should be recognised.

Amongst other Bollywood personalities, even Hema Malini saw Khan fit to represent India.

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar too extended support.

The Indian Olympic Association announced that it had approached Sachin Tendulkar, music composer A R Rahman and Olympic gold winner Abhinav Bindra to become India's ambassadors at the Olympics.

IOA, however, clarified that Salman Khan would be one of the ambassadors.

Facing flak for Khan's appointment, the IOA had said that Khan was not going to be India's 'sole' face at the Rio Olympics.

Star cricketer Sachin Tendulkar accepted Indian Olympic Association's invitation and became India's third goodwill ambassador for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Expressing gratitude, the national Olympic body confirmed that the Cricket legend accepted the offer today.

Tendulkar would join other Olympic goodwill ambassadors- shooter Abhinav Bindra and Bollywood superstar Salman Khan; IOA said that the association of goodwill ambassadors would take the Indian sport forward.

Music composer AR Rahman has accepted the Indian Olympic Association's offer to become India's fourth goodwill ambassador for the Rio Olympics.

He will join the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Abhinav Bindra and Salman Khan in representing India.

With over 90 athletes having qualified for Olympics in Rio, India will send the largest ever contingent for the event which will start on 5 August.

In an interview, actor Salman Khan took a jibe at the media and questioned why Rahman and Tendulkar's nomination as Olympic's Goodwill Ambassadors wasn't questioned.

He further said that he couldn't be criticised fo his court cases as several politicians of the country too had court cases registered against them.
