Engineers and doctors are both equally important for the development of the country.
In order to promote quality education in engineering and medicine, the central government provides several scholarships for aspiring students, ensuring that financial issues and other obstacles do not affect their studies.
From government scholarships for general category students to minorities, girls, specially-abled students, and economically-weaker sections, here are 7 top ones.
List of govt scholarships for engineering, medical students
HRD Ministry annually awards merit-based scholarship to 82,000 students
Human Resources Development Ministry's Department of Higher Education offers "Central Sector Scholarship Scheme", providing scholarships for professional courses, including medicine and engineering.
Class-12 students who've scored 80-percentile with family income less than Rs. 8LPA are eligible. They get Rs. 10,000/academic year.
Merit cum Means Scholarship offered by Ministry of Minority Affairs
Minority Affairs Ministry awards 60,000 Merit-cum-Means Scholarships for technical/professional courses, including engineering and medicine, annually to students from minority communities like Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi.
Students' family income shouldn't exceed Rs. 2,50,000/year; they must've scored at least 50% in Class-12.
Awardees get Rs. 10,000/year apart from course fees (maximum Rs. 20,000).
Eligible students can apply on National Scholarship Portal by 30 Sep'18.

Saksham Scholarship scheme for differently-abled degree students
MHRD also offers "Saksham Scholarship Scheme" through AICTE for differently-abled students for technical education, including UG-level engineering, at AICTE-approved institutes.
1,000 such scholarships are awarded annually. It provides up to Rs. 30,000 as tuition fee and Rs. 20,000 per year as incidental allowances to awardees.
Those having disability of 40% or more and family income below Rs. 8LPA are eligible (2018-19 applications opening soon).
Pragati Scholarship Scheme for Girls for technical education
MHRD's Pragati Scholarship Scheme is an AICTE scholarship for meritorious girl students wishing to take admission in AICTE-approved technical institutes for graduation.
Every year, 4,000 Pragati scholarships are awarded. MHRD provides upto Rs. 30,000 for tuition fee and Rs. 20,000 per academic year as incidental charges.
Candidates' family income shouldn't exceed Rs. 8 LPA. Applications (opening soon) can be submitted via National Scholarship Portal.
DEPD's Post-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities
Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry's Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) offers Post-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities.
All graduate courses recognized by AICTE/UGC are covered, including engineering and medicine.
Monthly allowance for UG medicine/engineering course is Rs. 1,200 for hosteller and Rs. 550 for day-scholar. Additional allowances may be applicable depending on the student's disability.
Applications are accepted until 31 Oct'18.
MHRD, UGC provide Special Scholarship Scheme for North Eastern Region
To promote higher education among economically weaker sections in North Eastern Region, MHRD and UGC offer ISHAN UDAY Scholarship Scheme.
Every year, 10,000 scholarships are awarded for general degrees, technical and professional courses, including engineering and medicine.
Students' family income shouldn't exceed Rs. 4.5 LPA. Amount of scholarship is Rs. 7,800/month for technical/medical/professional/paramedical courses.
Applications are yet to be invited on National Scholarship Portal.
FAEA-BHEL Scholarship scheme for socially and economically weaker sections
The state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Foundation for Academic Excellence and Access (FAEA) award scholarships for students from socially, economically weaker backgrounds.
Students wishing to pursue undergraduate technical/professional courses (maximum 5 years' duration), including engineering and medicine, from any college/institute/university are eligible. Shortlisted applicants are selected after interviews.
Full cost of study plans may be covered, including tuition-fee, maintenance-allowance, hostel/mess charges, etc.
