Train traffic was hit in Maharashtra after two wagons of a goods train caught fire in Dahanu of Palghar district on Thursday night.
The goods train was coming from Surat and incident occurred 6km from Vangaon station at around 10:45 PM. The wagons contained plastic granules.
Railway Protection Force inspector Mahendra Singh said 15th and 16th bogies of the train caught fire.
Overhead wire snapped and fell on moving train
Reports suggest an overhead wire snapped and fell on the moving train, sparking the fire.
"The fire was caused due to sparks from the overhead wire as it carries around 25,000V current and huge balls of fire were seen," Singh said.
Officials of the railways and firefighters rushed to the spot. Western Railway's general manager AK Gupta was present during restoration work.
Affect on trains
Few Mumbai-bound trains have been canceled
After the incident, Western Railway immediately switched off power supply on both up and down routes.
All traffic between Mumbai and Ahmedabad was halted and few trains were canceled.
Mumbai-bound trains which have been canceled include Ahmedabad Passenger, Dahanu-Andheri local, Valsad Mumbai Passenger, Surat-Mumbai Flying Ranee, Dahanu Panvel, and Boisar Diva shuttle.
However, suburban services ran normally between Churchgate and Virar.
Railway official says few long distance trains have been affected
Other trains which have been canceled are Virar-Dahanu shuttle, Mumbai-Ahmedabad Passenger, Mumbai Surat Flying Ranee and Mumbai Valsad Passenger, Churchgate-Dahanu local. A railway official said some of the long distance trains were also affected due to the mishap.
A total of 12 trains were canceled, 10 were short-terminated
