From television's bahu to giant-killer: Looking at Irani's journey

In 2003, Irani joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. She fought her first general elections in 2004 against Congress' Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk constituency.

Although she lost, she became a formidable force in the party.

In 2014, Irani showed she doesn't shy away from challenges. She fought against Rahul in Amethi but lost by a margin of over one lakh votes.

Irani created history, won Congress' loyal constituency

Despite losing, Irani didn't ditch Amethi and as a result, citizens chose her over Rahul.

Interestingly, Amethi has essentially been the bastion of Gandhi family and was represented in Lok Sabha by Rahul's father Rajiv Gandhi too.

Post-victory, Irani quoted Dushyant Kumar's poem and tweeted, "Kaun kehta hai aasmaa me surakh nahinho sakta" (Who says you can't drill a hole in a sky).
