A resident of Chamri village in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur got the shock of his life when received an electricity bill of more than a whopping Rs. 128 crore just for using "fan and light".
Shamim, who lives with his wife, said that when he approached electricity department officials to rectify the billing error, he was told to pay the exorbitant bill.

Shamim also said that the power supply to his house was also cut off as he failed to pay the bill.
The exact amount he was charged -for a home connection of 2 Kilowatt- is Rs. 128,45,95,444, reported ANI.
Accusing the electricity department of sending him the bill of entire Hapur, Shamim said that he receives an average monthly bill of Rs. 700-800.
We only use fan and light: Shamim's wife
"I am running from pillar to post but no one is listening," Shamim said.
He added, "It seems that the electricity department wants me to pay the bill of whole Hapur."
"We only use fan and light. How can the amount be so high? We are poor. How we will pay such a large amount?" his wife Khairu Nisha questioned.

"No one listens to our pleas, how will we submit that amount? When we went to complain about it (the exorbitant electricity bill), we were told that they won't resume our electricity connection unless we pay the bill," Shamim was quoted as saying by ANI.
Exorbitant bill generated due to technical fault: Electricity department's engineer
Meanwhile, Ram Sharan, an electrical engineer with the electricity department, has admitted that the exorbitant bill must have been generated due to some technical fault, reported ANI.
Claiming that it was not a "big deal", the engineer said that the technical fault will be rectified once Shamim sends the electricity bill back to the department, following which a fresh bill will be issued.

"This must be a technical fault. If they provide us with the bill we will issue them an updated one after rectifying the technical fault in the system. This is no big deal. Technical faults do take place," Ram Sharan told ANI.
