On Wednesday, the Supreme Court suggested that tests for coronavirus must be free, even in private labs, asking the government to explore the feasibility of this plan. Private labs charge Rs. 4,500 for the tests and a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and S Ravindra Bhat noted it was an exorbitant amount.
SC made the observations while hearing a plea filed by advocate Shashank Deo Sudhi, who told that government hospitals are overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases and getting one tested there has become daunting.
The petitioner also noted that some citizens are already facing financial difficulties and this turn of events violated the Right to Life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.
