An army official has been arrested in Rajasthan for allegedly demanding money from candidates in recruitment drives to issue fitness certificates.

Last month, the anti-terrorist squad busted a gang involved in the scam and arrested four, who informed them about Lt Col Dr Jagdish Puri's role.

"Posted in Jodhpur, he was responsible for issuing medical fitness certificate for the candidates," said Umesh Mishra, ADG-ATS.

Lt Col Puri, along with the four accused, used to charge candidates Rs. 35,000-40,000 to issue fitness certificates, which is the last stage of the selection process. In the last 1.5 years, they had dealt with over 24 candidates.

The ATS received tip-off from Military Intelligence, and arrested Arjun Singh, Mahendra Singh, Nand Singh Rathore and Sunil Vyas on May 23.

Based on information from the arrested men, Lt Col Puri was questioned in Jaipur, then arrested. He has been booked for cheating and criminal conspiracy, among others.

The army has assured cooperation in the investigation.

During raids, the ATS recovered Rs. 1.79cr cash and documents of four candidates from Rathore's Jaipur house.

They are probing exactly how many candidates were cheated by the gang.
