J&K encounter: One civilian dies, LeT commander believed killed

At least one person, a civilian, was killed in an encounter between terrorists and security forces in J&K's Kulgam.

There are reports a wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, Junaid Mattoo, has been killed.

More terrorists are suspected to be holed up inside a house at Malik Mohalla in Arwani village.

As of 3pm, the gunbattle that broke out at 10 in the morning was still ongoing.

Who is Junaid Mattoo?

Mattoo was involved in an attack on a police-van last year, when three cops were killed. He is also suspected in the murder of a policeman in Kulgam on June 15. One Azad Malik and a Pakistani national are also suspected to be hiding.

Security forces received intel that LeT terrorists, including Mattoo, were hiding in the area. Mattoo carries a reward of Rs. 10L on his head.

Five civilians, who reportedly tried to stop the gunfight, were hit by pellets, officials said. The one who died, Mummad Ashraf, was hit by a bullet.

He was rushed to a hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Security forces recovered the body of Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Junaid Mattoo alias Jana along with two others killed in an encounter on June 16.

The others have been identified as 18-year-old Adil Mushtaq Mir alias Nana and 20-year-old Nisar Ahmad Wani. All three belonged to the banned LeT.

The gunbattle that broke out in Kulgam yesterday lasted for hours.
