On 23rd June, a top cop in J&K was lynched by a mob in Srinagar who attacked him when he was clicking pictures near a mosque.
DSP Ayub Pandith's body was later recovered from outside the Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta.
According to witnesses, some miscreants attacked him as hundreds of people thronged the city's largest mosque on 'Shab-e-Qadr', one of the holiest nights for Muslims.

Some youths reportedly attacked the officer while he was on frisking duty at the Masjid. They stripped him naked and thrashed and stoned him.
Pandith tried to flee and even fired in self-defence, injuring three, but he couldn't escape.
His security guards ran away as the mob was too big to handle.
Restrictions on movement were declared in areas under seven police stations.
Two arrested, another suspect identified
DGP SP Vaid said two people had been arrested in the matter. A third had been identified, and attempts are on to nab him. "All of them will have to face the law," he said.

Top political leaders condemn brutal lynching
J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti warned violent elements, saying if security forces lose patience, it will become difficult.
Former CM Omar Abdullah called it a "tragedy", adding those responsible would "burn in hell for their sins".
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi also condemned the murder. "The brutal lynching of DySP Md Ayub Pandith marks a new low. Pained beyond words at the horrific incident," he tweeted.

SIT formed to investigate Ayub Pandith's lynching
J&K Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Jamia Masjid lynching of DSP Pandith.
The police arrested 12 people in connection with the lynching.
Director General of Police S P Vaid said a senior officer from the area was transferred too.
The police were also investigating if Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was present in the mosque during lynching.

DSP Ayub Pandith lynching: 20 arrested, one involved terrorist killed
Investigation is ongoing and more arrests will be made, police said.
Two weeks ago, a terrorist involved in the murder was killed in Budgam's Redbug area.
Pandith was allegedly recording videos of stone-pelting when locals attacked him.
