Siddaramaiah orders probe into Sasikala's VIP treatment

DIG (Prisons) D. Roopa, who outed the ongoing corruption in the Bengaluru Central jail, has been transferred to traffic and road safety department by the Karnataka government.

The move was made only days after Roopa exposed HN Sathyanarayana Rao, DGP Prisons of receiving Rs. 2 crore in bribe to provide special treatment to AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala.

Sasikala Natarajan who was widely known as the close confidante of Jayalalithaa and most likely to succeed the AIADMK supremo as the next CM was sentenced to 4 years in prison in a disproportionate assets case.

The court convicted and sentenced Sasikala for conspiring with and abetting Jayalalithaa's schemes to inherit a wealth of Rs. 53.6 crore.

After reports of AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala getting VIP treatment in Parappana Agrahara jail surfaced, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah ordered a high-level inquiry on Thursday.

It's been said that "special facilities" are being provided to Sasikala in exchange for an alleged Rs. 2 crore bribe to senior officers.

The probe order came after DIG (prisons) D Roopa submitted a letter to DGP (prisons) Rao.

In her letter submitted to the DGP (prisons), D Roopa alleged that Sasikala had been given a special kitchen and other facilities by the prison staff.

The DIG (prisons) also accused the prison administration of turning a blind eye to the drug trafficking inside the prison.

She also alleged that Abdul Karim Telgi, convicted in the stamp paper scam, was provided undertrials as aides.

D Roopa, the IPS officer, who exposed the VIP treatment being received by Sasikala in jail is not influenced by political power and ranking.

As an SP in MP, Roopa had earlier arrested the then MP CM Uma Bharti after a court order in a rioting case.

As Bengaluru's DCP, she withdrew number of police personnel unauthorized to be attendants of VVIPs and politicians.

DGP's reactionDGP Rao refutes Roopa's reports

Director General (Prisons) H N Satyanarayana Rao refuted the allegations leveled against him and said he was open to a probe.

Rao also denied that he received Rs. 2 crore as bribe saying he was following court orders.

He further said, "There is no truth to any allegations in the letter."

RepercussionsD Roopa's allegations create furore

DIG Roopa's letter has created an uproar not only between police and prison personnel but also between political parties with the opposition blaming Siddaramaiah for failing to keep a check on the prison.

In Tamil Nadu, DMK and other opposition parties attacked the AIADMK government on the same issue.

BJP too joined in and blamed Siddaramaiah for the poor state of prison.
