Gujarat: 2 killed, several injured in group clashes

At least two people were killed and several others got injured after violent clashes took place between the Bharwad and Rajput communities in Gujarat on Thursday.

The clashes took place in Morbi and the adjoining Surendranagar district.

Post the clash, Internet services have been suspended for the time being to keep a check on the situation.

Police reported incidents of stone-pelting and rioting.

As reported by Rajkot Range IGP, DN Patel, the Rajput community had an altercation with the Bharwads while they were going to Dhrangadhra for a condolence meeting of Rajput leader Indrasinh Zala, who was murdered last Friday.

Meanwhile, the Bharwads had gathered at a temple to discuss an upcoming festival and it is during that time the two communities clashed as an argument erupted.

Around 10 cars and 25 two-wheelers were set on fire during the violent clash.

Firstly, clashes erupted in Halvad which later spread to Dhrangadhra in Surendranagar district.

The violent mob attacked shops at the Chuli village.

A resident of Halvad got killed in the firing.

Meanwhile, the situation remains tense in both Morbi and Surendranagar districts.

Action taken15 companies of police have been deployed to keep vigil

At least 15 companies of police have been deployed in both Morbi and Surendranagar districts to keep a check on the tense situation.

Three DIGs namely DN Patel, Brijeshkumar Jha, and Ajaikumar Chaudhary have been sent to maintain vigil.

Moreover, around 35 ST buses carrying 700 passengers were halted to avert any untoward incident and would be escorted by police.

BackgroundThe Indrasinh Zala and Popat Bharwad case

Nearly five years ago, the family members of 34-year-old Popat Bharwad, was hacked to death over an altercation in Surendranagar district by four persons, including Indrasinh Zala.

Zala who was serving prison for the same was travelling with his family last Friday, when he was murdered.

Zala's brother Ajitsinh then filed a police complaint, saying Bharwad's associates were pursuing a vendetta.
