Major disaster averted in repeat of 'sabotage' attempt

The motorman of the Pune-Santragachi Express averted a major disaster when he stopped the train immediately after hitting a 1.5-metre metal piece kept on the tracks at Kalamboli.

The metal got dragged for about 50 metres before the driver stopped due to a screeching sound. Sabotage is suspected.

A similar incident happened at Diva on January 24.

Skywalk collapses at Dahisar, one injured

65-year-old Sunil Kulkarni was seriously injured after a section of a skywalk in suburban Dahisar West collapsed on him.

He was rushed to Silverline Hospital in the vicinity, where he is undergoing treatment. There was no other casualty.

The 850-metre skywalk, built by the MMRDA, was opened to the public in 2011.

Police have launched an inquiry and will register a case, if necessary.

Temperature in Mumbai on February 7 dropped to 14 degrees Celsius, the coldest day of February in four years. The last time it went this low was in 2013, with minimum-temperature 13.2 degrees Celsius.

Cold conditions due to winds from Gujarat and Saurashtra are expected to last till the weekend.

The coldest ever day of February was recorded in 2008 at 8.5 degrees Celsius.

State scholarship scam estimated at Rs 1,415 crore

An SIT has estimated the total amount embezzled under the state scholarship scam at Rs 1,415 crore.

Colleges, in connivance with corrupt social justice and tribal welfare officials, awarded scholarships to ineligible or non-existent candidates, sometimes multiple times, without the students' knowledge.

The departments have been inactive in cooperation with the SIT. Only a minor percentage of the embezzled funds have been deposited back.

Navi Mumbai

Temples to get Rs 1 crore for relocation

One temple each in 10 villages, to be relocated due to the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport, will be offered Rs 1 crore for their land.

Plots will also be alloted for rebuilding them in the new settlements, expected to be completed by June.

Smaller temples will be compensated according to their valuation.

The first flight from the airport will take off in December 2019.

Uddhav Thackeray's party is planning to jump into the fray in the upcoming Gujarat Assembly Elections, with Patidar leader Hardik Patel as the face of Shiv Sena.

Vote in BMC polls for discounts at hill stations

To increase voter turnout in the BMC polls, the state EC has offered discounts at hotels and restaurants in Lonavla-Khandala, Matheran and Mahabaleshwar, to those who vote.

A concession of 15% in restaurants and 20% for lodging will be offered from February 21-28.

Roughly 100 hotels and restaurants in Lonavla-Khandala, 300 in Mahabaleshwar and those at Matheran have put up banners for the cause.

Dadar to get two new platforms

Dadar is set to get two new platforms, with one serving fast trains originating there.

Out of 750 local trains moving through the station daily, 60 start or end at Dadar. Out of 90 long-distance trains, 14 start or end there.

The construction will cost Central Railway Rs 10 crore, and relocation of its offices currently on the land will cost Rs 28 crore.
