Women safety in India worse than Syria, Afghanistan, finds survey
The Thomson Reuters Foundation spoke to 550 experts on women issues and analyzed issues like- gender-based discrimination, sexual/non-sexual violence, sexist traditions, and trafficking, to conclude India is the worst country for women.
In 2011, we took the fourth position.
The survey results were widely debated. BJP ministers called it inappropriate while Opposition leaders used the figures to target the saffron party and Narendra Modi.
"India is far ahead of many countries in most of these areas and has also seen significant improvement in indicators when compared with its own performance in previous years. Therefore, the ranking of India is a surprise and clearly inaccurate," Maneka Gandhi said.
