Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to not contest 2019 elections

Newly appointed Congress General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will not be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections this year, according to sources.

Priyanka Gandhi, the younger sister of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, will instead focus on the party's campaigning for the elections in April-May 2019, said reports citing sources. She is the Congress party's incharge for Uttar Pradesh (East).

According to the Congress's first list of candidates for the upcoming LS polls, Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh while Sonia Gandhi will seek election from Raebareli in the state.

Congress's first list for LS polls didn't include Priyanka's name

The Congress party on 7 March released its first list of 15 candidates to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to be held in April-May this year.

However, the list did not have the name of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who had recently entered active politics in January. She was also made the party's General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East.

Since her entry into active politics, 47-year-old Priyanka Gandhi held several meetings with Congress workers in Uttar Pradesh. On Tuesday, she also addressed a rally in Gujarat's Ahmedabad - her first speech "outside the Gandhi family strongholds" - after attending a Congress Working Committee meeting.
