Tamil Nadu under Palaniswami: Taking Amma's rule forward

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami kickstarted his regime by paying homage to the portrait of Jayalalithaa and approving to shut 500 state-run liquor shops (TASMACs).

The AIADMK had assured the prohibition in the state in a phased manner.

Jayalalithaa after having taken over as the Chief Minister in 2016 had ordered for the closure of 500 TASMAC outlets which Palaniswami now ratified.

Assuming the post of Tamil Nadu's CM Palaniswami gave his first formal address.

Highlighting that Amma had already accomplished 11 poll promises during her tenure, he said he would fulfil the rest and announced 5 benefits to that effect.

He said that he would run "Amma's government" under the leadership and direction of "Chinnamma" i.e. VK Sasikala.

1,000 shut, 500 more TASMACs to go

So far, 1,000 TASMAC liquor shops have been shut by TN government and 500 still remain. Managed by Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation these shops alone bring in an annual revenue of almost Rs. 26,000 crore to the state.

21 Feb 2017Palaniswami makes way for better amenities for Tamil Nadu's women

Amongst the 5 orders issued by Palaniswami was the ratification of 2 women-centric schemes.

He has raised the financial aid to pregnant women from Rs.2,000 to Rs.18,000.

He also announced the Amma two-wheeler scheme through which working women would get Rs.20,000 or approximately 50% subsidy to two-wheelers.

In doing so Palaniswami has upheld all of Amma's election promises made to the women of TN.

The other two orders issued catered to 5000 fishermen - announcing a special housing scheme for them.

The CM also directed raise in monthly aid to the jobless youth from Rs.150 to Rs.300 who have completed Class-10th, and Rs.400 from Rs.200 for those who have completed Class-12th and from Rs.300 to Rs.600 for graduates.

Palaniswami said drought support would be provided to farmers soon.

Under the new CM, the Tamil Nadu government constituted a five-member committee to implement the 7th Pay Commission recommendations which would benefit government employees, teachers, and pensioners.

The government also sanctioned a sum of Rs. 2247 crore as drought relief to more than 3.2 million farmers in the state.

These were the first few economic initiatives that Tamil Nadu CM Palaniswami rolled out.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami arrived in New Delhi on February 26 for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of issues, including funds for damage after Cyclone Vardah, and exempting TN from the NEET.

Palaniswami had met Modi briefly on February 24 in Coimbatore, at the inauguration of the Adiyogi's bust.

The Election Commission has clarified that the Tamil Nadu government cannot announce any new projects under the upcoming budget announcement specifically in RK Nagar.

RK Nagar bypolls are scheduled for April 12, and since the model code of conduct is in place, the government cannot attempt to woo voters.

The by-election was scheduled after former CM Jayalalithaa's death.
