Two days after Youth Congress members publicly slaughtered a cow, it suspended three members including district president Rejil Makutti.

This comes amid frequent cases of violence against cow sellers, especially by vigilante Hindu groups.

Different groups in Kerala have organized "beef fests" to protest the Centre's move. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to PM Narendra Modi, calling it a decision against "the principles of secularism and federalism", and called it an interference "with people's right to eat."
