BSP's Mayawati resigns from Rajya Sabha: What does this mean?

Mayawati's way forward

On July 18, BSP chief Mayawati resigned from the Rajya Sabha after complaining of not being allowed to speak on atrocities allegedly committed on Dalits in UP.

She accused Rajya Sabha deputy chairman PJ Kurien of not giving her the chance to speak.

What will happen now that the former UP CM, who has suffered back-to-back electoral defeats, has offered her resignation?

In context

Mayawati's way forward

BSP's loss, BJP's gain

BSP, which is suffering in the wake of several senior leaders leaving the party due to alleged corruption by Mayawati, has lost one MP. This will prove beneficial for the BJP as MLAs elect Rajya Sabha members, and it enjoys majority in the UP Assembly.

What happens after she quits?

What happens after she quits?

Her resignation is unlikely to affect BSP's political chances, which are anyway bleak; it has 19 MLAs in UP's 403-member assembly.

After quitting, she will have to send a resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari.

However, she won't be able to mention any reason. If she deviates from the proforma, her letter will be rejected.

The Dalit leader could reorient her strategy to emerge winner

There's a silver lining for the Dalit leader: she can go to her support base and claim a stronghold as a champion of Dalit rights. Despite political rivalry, several other parties support her claims that atrocities are being committed in BJP-ruled UP.

Mayawati's resignation accepted by Rajya Sabha

The Rajya Sabha has accepted the resignation of BSP supremo Mayawati, who quit two days ago alleging she wasn't allowed to talk about atrocities on Dalits.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien insisted it was "a misunderstanding". He said she hadn't given notice about wanting to speak.

Mayawati's term was set to end in April 2018.
