Election Commission declares votes of 2 Congress rebels invalid

As per the rules, a legislator can't show his ballot-paper to anyone, except his own party representative.

The Congress had alleged that two of its MLAs Bhola Gohil & Raghav Patel showed their ballot-papers to Amit Shah.

Both Congress and BJP reached out to EC, the former sought that those two votes be declared void.

After a high-voltage drama, the EC declared them invalid.

Gujarat Rajya Sabha Election Results Live

Polling day is here for the Gujarat Rajya Sabha polls that saw a lot of dramatic ongoings. Contesting for three seats were BJP leaders Amit Shah, Smriti Irani and Balwantsinh Rajput, and Congress' Ahmed Patel.

Such a fierce contest is being seen after about two decades; generally, candidates of major parties get elected unopposed.

Here's all you need to know about the much-anticipated polls.

Amit Shah

Amit Shah to help fortify BJP's place in Rajya Sabha

Amit Shah is set to make his grand entry into the Rajya Sabha after the current round of polls.

Known as the architect of BJP's splendid political wins since the 2014 General Elections, Shah is a first-time Parliamentarian.

While BJP recently became the single largest party in the Rajya Sabha, party sources note that Shah's presence will be a morale booster for BJP members.

Drama

High drama ahead of RS polls

This has been one of the most dramatic elections in some time. In the preceding weeks, six Congress MLAs resigned within two days, striking a major blow to the opposition party.

Congress accused BJP of poaching and bribing its MLAs. Then it flew out all its MLAs to a Bengaluru resort till polling day.

The issue of BJP "kidnapping" Congress MLAs rocked Delhi too.
