Reliance Infrastructure's Mumbai Metro has partnered with PayPal, one of the biggest platforms in the world for global online payments.
The move, announced on Thursday, will provide daily metro commuters PayPal's easy-to-use and robust platform as a payment option for online smart card recharges.
Notably, it marks PayPal's entry into the Indian mass transit segment.

The option to pay via PayPal will be accessible on both Mumbai Metro's mobile app as well as website.
To make the payment, all you'd have to do is enter card details and go with the routine procedure to complete a smart recharge.
Following this, you'd be redirected to the payments page, where PayPal has to be selected instead of regular payment options.
Statement from PayPal India's Director
"PayPal's integration with Mumbai Metro payment network mirrors the agility of the transit system and marks our entry into the mass transit sector, giving commuters the ease of a seamless and safe payment experience," Devendra Trivedi, Paypal India's Director, said while announcing the tie-up.
Mumbai Metro's strides in digital payments
Over the years, Reliance Infrastructure has taken several strides to revolutionize the ticketing system of Mumbai Metro.
It has encouraged cashless modes of payments and was, in fact, the very first metro service in the country to accept digital payments when demonetization was announced.
Just recently, Mumbai Metro had even partnered with PhonePe to enable UPI-based smart card recharges.
So, no more standing in long queues
That said, with PayPal, PhonePe and a bunch of other online payment options, Mumbai Metro is giving users a ton of options to recharge their smart cards.
This not just simplifies processes but also saves commuters from standing in long queues, which can be often annoying, especially in an overly crowded city like Mumbai.
