Samsung follows the 'notch trend', reveals new display designs

Finally, Samsung gives in to the notch trend

After staying away from notches for more than a year, Samsung is finally giving in to the trend.

The South Korean giant held its fifth annual developer conference on November 7 and unveiled new display designs for its future phones.

With that, as one could guess, we saw what future notches from the company would look like.

Here's a sneak peek.

While raising the bar with the big foldable phone reveal, Samsung went on to tease the plans for its future phone displays.

The company presented four display types named - Infinity U, V, O, and the New Infinity, The Verge reported.

Three of these were classifications for different notch designs, which looked different than those on the iPhones and Pixels, but still pretty familiar.

Infinity U, V, and O

The Infinity U display has a U-shaped notch, one that looks pretty similar to what we saw on the Essential Phone.

The Infinity V comes with a V-shaped cut-out, but with four sides - like a small ink-pen nib.

Finally, it is Infinity O, where we have a circular notch that sits at an off-center position rather than the upper edge of the screen.

The fourth display category, New Infinity, won't have a notch/cut-out at all.

As it seems, this design might be integrated with future flagships from the company, while others could come on A or J series phones.

Samsung didn't reveal much about this display, but from what it looks like, the company might use a slider mechanism for housing camera and other sensors.

Release timeline

When will Samsung release notched phones?

There's no word on the availability, but Samsung's keynote indicated that we'll at least see a few notched Samsung-branded devices next year.

"We're going to keep going. The bezels are going to shrink even further," said, Hassan Anjum, product marketing director at Samsung. "These are new concepts that are just around the corner, and I can't wait to tell you more about them."
