Why Microsoft is teasing 'Windows 1.0' in 2019

Microsoft has a knack of teasing new products and services, but just recently, the Redmond giant did something pretty weird.

It teased the release of Windows 1.0, a version of its desktop operating system that showed up decades ago.

So, what is this all about? Why is Microsoft teasing Windows 1.0 now in 2019?

Let's find out.

First of all, what exactly did Microsoft tease

Microsoft recently shared a tweet saying "Introducing the all-new Windows 1.0, with MS-Dos Executive, Clock, and more."

The post had a 13-second-long video, which had an 80s look and displayed logos of all Windows iterations, from the all-new Windows 10 to the original Windows 1.0.

The cryptic post raised immediate confusion and people started coming up with theories about what Microsoft was up to.

Connection

Also, Microsoft updated its account pages with Windows 1.0 images

Along with the teaser, Microsoft also updated the official Instagram and Twitter pages for Windows with promotional materials and logos for Windows 1.0.

The company denied offering any comment on the strange move, but the folks at Neowin have come up with an interesting theory.

They think that the teaser might be associated with the release of Netflix's Stranger Things' Season 3.

Evidence

'Stranger Things' connection explained

'Stranger Things' connection explained

First, the background music used in the video matches that of Stranger Things.

Plus, it is also worth noting that Windows 1.0 was released in 1985, which is the same year the third season of the show, set to debut on Thursday, is set in.

Perhaps, the company wants to give us a reminder of what had happened in 1985 in the real world.

Other companies

Other companies are also doing something similar

To note, if Neowin's theory is correct, Microsoft won't be the only company walking down the memory lane for Stranger Things 3's release.

Nike recently released limited edition shoes from that decade, while Coca-Cola announced the limited release of the 'New Coke' from the 80s.

However, unless there is a confirmation, there's no way to be sure about this connection.

Other possible explanations

Among other theories, some Windows fans have suggested Microsoft could either be looking to release Windows 1.0 as an app for Windows 10 or planning to open source the desktop operating system, which was the first to have a graphical user interface.
