Gaurika Singh is all set to become the youngest athlete to participate in the Rio Olympics starting from 5th August.

She will be 13 years and 235 days old when she will compete in the women's 100m backstroke preliminaries on Sunday, 7th August.

Her coach Rhys Gormley said Gaurika is going to Rio to gain experience and will surely break her own national record.

Gaurika Singh is Nepalese swimmer, who began to participate in major tournaments at the age of 11. She was born on 2nd November, 2002.

She is based in London and trains there itself under coaches Rhys Gormley and Christine Green.

Gaurika is a national record holder in 100m backstroke. She will be a part of the Nepalese contingent at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Singh survives Nepal earthquake

Gaurika was in Nepal, competing in the national championships when an earthquake struck Nepal in April last year. She remembers the incident as a horrifying one and donated all the winnings from the tournament to a charity Shanti Education Initiative Nepal (SEIN).

Gaurika Singh rose to fame at the South Asian Games held in Guwahati earlier this year.

She won one silver medal and three bronze medals at the event. She also bettered her national records in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley events.

She became the first Nepali swimmer to bag an individual medal at an event.

Gaurika selected for Rio Olympics

Gaurika was selected in the Nepali contingent participating in the Rio Olympics. She was selected after the qualification rounds at Russia and Dubai. She will participate in women's 100m backstroke event.

Gaurika's father, Paras Singh, who accompanies her for most of her tournaments says that she is special. He said, "It's unbelievable that she's the youngest Olympian in Rio and amazing how she copes with all the pressure."
