Indian women hold Japan in a draw

Rio Olympics - Day Two

The Indian women's hockey team fought hard against Japan, ending the match in a 2-2 draw in their opening match at the Olympics.

Japan's Emi Nishikori and Mie Nakashima scored a goal each in the 15th and 28th minute respectively.

India fought back and Rani Rampal scored the first goal in the 31st minute. Lilima Minz scored another in the 40th minute.

Indian women's archery team lost to Russia in the quarterfinals at the Olympics.

Deepika Kumari, Laxmirani Majhi and Bombayla Devi were ahead 2-1 after three sets, but the Russians bounced back in the last set and equaled the scores.

In the shootout, the Indian team fell short of two points and lost 23-25.

India earlier beat Colombia in the pre quarter-final round, 5-3.

South Korean team wins eighth successive gold

The South Korean women's archery team beat Russia in the archery finals. The South Korean team dominated the Russians in the match, winning 5-1. It is their eighth successive gold medal in the Olympics.

Dipa Karmakar scripted history after she became the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the individual vault finals.

She finished eighth in the qualifying round, after losing her 6th position.

Dipa successfully performed 'Produnova' vault, one of the most dangerous and difficult vaults in gymnastics in the qualifying round.

She will participate in the finals on 14th August.

TennisIndia out of women's doubles

India's tennis team of Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare lost to Chinese pair in the first round of women's doubles.

The Indian pair went down 6-7, 7-5, 7-5 after winning the first set.

Now, after the men's and women's team have crashed out, India's only hope in tennis would be in the mixed doubles event with Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza.

Indian shooters disappoint, again

Heena Sindhu was eliminated from the women's 10m air pistol qualifying event, standing 14th in 44 competitors. In men's trap shooting event, Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Kynan Chenai also disappointed, finishing 17th and 19th respectively.

Indian team to face Britain next

After ending the match in a 2-2 draw with Japan, Indian women's hockey team will face Great Britain in their next pool match on Tuesday. Indian team is ranked 13th in the world, whereas Britain is ranked 7th.

French gymnast Samir Ait Said broke his leg while landing a vault in the men's team event. His knee snapped into two and the sound of popping could be heard throughout the venue. He was taken for surgery later.
