Indian Premier League outfit, Delhi Daredevils have roped in former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif as their new assistant coach.

Kaif will now assist current Delhi head coach Ricky Ponting, who was appointed the gaffer in 2018.

The former Indian cricketer brings immense knowledge and experience into the fold.

Besides Ponting, the former Indian cricketer will also join James Hopes in the Delhi's coaching team.

Kaif, who earlier plied his trades as a player for RCB, RR and KXIP, said, "I'm delighted to be part of the Delhi Daredevils and am looking forward to bringing together an exciting group of boys, who are going to make their franchise and country proud."


Kaif was a celebrated player in domestic cricket

Kaif announced his retirement from the game recently after a stellar first-class career, which spanned over two decades.

He was crucial for Uttar Pradesh's famous first domestic title.

The stylish player also led Chhattisgarh in their debut Ranji Trophy season.

In 186 first-class matches, Kaif managed 10,229 runs with 19 tons and 59 fifties.

He also played 269 List A matches.

Meanwhile, DD Director Mustafa Ghouse looked excited. He said, "Kaif brings in huge amounts of experience and a keen understanding of the game to our backroom staff. He's highly admired on the circuit and will be a natural mentor for the youngsters in the team."

Kaif was one of the finest fielders and had the safest pair of hands.

Alongside Yuvraj Singh, the duo brought a new era, in 2000s, which saw Indian fielding improving drastically.

Kaif will look to help DD improve their fielding skills as well.

Last season, DD had massively under performed. It will be crucial for Kaif to steady the ship using his man-management skills.


Kaif's feats for India

He made his Test debut in 2000 against South Africa.

He played 13 Tests and managed 624 runs.

Further, he represented India in 125 ODIs and scored 2,753 runs. He hit 2 centuries and 17 fifties.

He played his final game for India in 2006 and didn't receive a national call-up in last 12 years.
