Ricky Ponting can be an ideal coach for India: Ganguly

One of the surprises of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League has been the rise of Delhi Capitals to the top of the table.

Although the entire team should be given the credit for this, coach Ricky Ponting's role has been a driving factor.

Meanwhile, Delhi's consultant Sourav Ganguly is impressed with him and feels that he could coach India as well.

Ponting was earlier involved in coaching Mumbai Indians. He had a successful run with them as it culminated in a title win.

He joined Delhi Capitals in 2018.

Even though Delhi finished at the bottom last season, he has managed to turn around their fortunes this season.

Notably, Delhi have qualified for the play-offs after several seasons. This term, they produced an all-round performance.

Ganguly impressed with Ponting's work as Delhi coach

Speaking on Ponting's coaching role with Delhi, Ganguly said to TOI, "We are great friends. There was a point in time when we were adversaries on the pitch, but over the years our friendship has grown. He has done some great work with the boys."

Ponting has the credentials to become Team India coach

On being asked if Ponting can become the Indian coach in the future, Ganguly was optimistic, as he said he is a great candidate.

"That you have to ask him, if he is ready to stay away from home for 8-9 months in a year. But yes, if you talk about credentials, there is no doubt he can be a great candidate," Ganguly said.

Potning doesn't have enough experience

Potning doesn't have enough experience

Ponting hardly has any full-time coaching experience in international cricket.

He was the interim coach for Australia in 2017 during T20Is in Sri Lanka, which the visitors lost.

He was again the assistant coach during 2017-18 Trans-Tasman Tri-Series.

The author feels that based on T20's coaching success, he cannot be backed to be a full-time coach across all formats.

Ganguly and Ponting eye IPL success with Delhi

For now, both Ganguly and Ponting would eye further success with Delhi, as the side aims for a finish in the top two. They take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on Wednesday and a win would virtually seal a top-two spot.
